Sergio Perez disagrees with the criticism currently being levelled at Racing Point for copying the 2019 Mercedes car. The 30-year-old driver emphasises that it took an enormous amount of energy to arrive at the current concept and goes on to state in the interview that his British employer has been able to take 'the next step' with the arrival of Aston Martin.

"No, no, no", Perez is sure when asked by Motorsport-Total.com if he finds it annoying that many people keep shouting that the 2020 Racing Point car is a copy of last season's Mercedes. The Mexican thinks that the work of the staff of the British race stable should not be underestimated. "I think it is important not to underestimate them. They have put a lot of effort into the development and have done a lot of work".

Other teams also criticized the approach taken by Racing Point, but the way it works is within the regulations of Formula 1. There were no protests. "Indeed, we cannot deny that our car is similar to Mercedes, but if there is a possibility of doing it that way, we will not fail. If there is a car that you want to copy, then it is the Mercedes, but it is not that simple", makes Perez clear. "To copy a car, you have to do a lot of work."

Aston Martin great asset

Starting in 2021, Racing Point will go through life as the Aston Martin F1 Team. Perez is pleased with the arrival of the British brand, but knows that it is accompanied by a higher expectation pattern. "Their return to Formula 1 as an iconic world brand is a huge boost for the team and at the same time puts a lot of pressure on the team. But I think the team had to take the next step. I think it will be very interesting for global brands to work with Aston as well. It's a great story that we will tell in Formula 1. I'm very proud and honoured to be involved in this project," concluded the driver from Racing Point.
