During the contract negotiations between Carlos Sainz and Ferrari, the coronavirus also played a major role. Because Sainz stays in Spain in home isolation, there was no possibility for the Spaniard to travel to Maranello to finalize the contract negotiations. In an interview with the Spanish TV show 'Vamos Sobre Rueda' Sainz told about the special situation.
"We talked without really seeing each other, that was pretty weird," Sainz says. Despite the home isolation Sainz was able to negotiate his contract well, partly because of the presence of his father. "It have been very special weeks, to negotiate without seeing each other is something strange, but I was at home with my father and in constant contact with my agent and in the end it was successful".
Focus on McLaren until 2021
Although the 2020 season has yet to start, Sainz already knows that he will be driving for another team next season. He himself expects his focus to be on Ferrari, when the last race in 2020 is over. "I know that here in Spain they are already thinking of 2021 to see me behind the wheel of a Ferrari and to fight for podiums and victories. What I want to do now is put Ferrari aside and focus on McLaren".
Sainz also hopes that his idol Fernando Alonso can make a comeback in Formula 1. Since the departure of Daniel Ricciardo at Renault, the veteran has been linked a lot to the French team. "It would be great to have him as an opponent. I always say that F1 is for the best drivers in the world, and Fernando is one of them", said Sainz.
