Helmut Marko has indicated that Max Verstappen is not taking any risks in preparation for the start of the season in Austria. The Red Bull Racing advisor states that the Limburger has already cancelled several events in recent weeks because it would not be safe enough. Bovendiet, the 77-year old Austrian, makes the striking statement that he hopes to be able to shake hands with Verstappen again at the beginning of July.
When asked what happens if Verstappen turns out to have contracted the coronavirus, Marko laughs: "There is no one who can replace Max. But we have the Brazilian Sergio Sette Camara, who can replace both teams (Red Bull and AlphaTauri, ed.)", he explains.
Verstappen takes no risks
In any case, in the run-up to the start of the season, Verstappen does not take any risk. He tries to stay at home as much as possible. "Verstappen is a bit anxious, I must say. We had a couple of events planned, but when safety wasn't really optimal he cancelled them. That's understandable", the 22-year old rider gets back cover from Marko.
The Dutchman has got it in his head to take the world title in Formula 1 for the first time in 2020. "His goal is to become the young world champion one day and to do so he avoids any risk", says the man from Graz, who knows that most other drivers have also lived in an isolated environment lately. "Most drivers live in Monaco, where safety measures were very, very strict. You were only allowed to leave the house for a few hours."
Marko hopes to shake hands with Verstappen
Marko hasn't seen Verstappen for a while now but doesn't know yet how he will greet his pupil later on. "We still have four weeks left. With the relaxation and the current figures we have in Austria, I hope we can do it with a handshake, as always", he concludes his story in conversation with the German RTL.
