F1 almost certainly to Portugal: ''We can confirm conversations with F1''
- GPblog.com
For the time being, the Formula 1 calendar still consists of eight European races and it could just be that a few more races will be added. One thing is certain; Portimao is doing everything in its power to appear on that calendar in 2020.
Formula 1 back to Portugal
The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve has been in the spotlight for several months now. The circuit in Portimao was delivered at the end of 2008 and saw Formula 1 cars on the track for the first time that year in a test by McLaren and Ferrari. In the following year other teams will also appear on the track, but then it will remain testing.
That's not for long, however, as the track located in the Algarve will throw a spanner in the works on the Formula 1 calendar in 2020. ‘’We confirm that conversations have been going on with F1, in order to host a GP this year at our circuit’’, let a spokesperson of the circuit know to GPblog.com.
Het circuit is er klaar voor
‘’We are fully committed in creating all the conditions that are needed for that to happen, and we believe our country and our circuit are the perfect venue for a new F1 race, the racetrack layout, the size of the circuit and its infrastructures, the fact that the Algarve has been almost Covid free, and the amazing weather and hotels, would surely create the perfect conditions for a great weekend’’, according to the spokesman.
It would be the first time since 1996 that the Grand Prix of Portugal returns on the calendar. Then Jacques Villeneuve won for Williams on the circuit of Estoril which was inaugurated in 1984. Other Portuguese circuits that were used for an official Formula 1 championship were Monsanto and Boavista.
