Max Verstappen is second in the World Championship after six Grands Prix. The Red Bull Racing driver is 37 points behind leader Lewis Hamilton. The Dutchman already indicated during the FIA press conference that he thinks both Mercedes should be ahead of him. Christian Horner is delighted with the performance of his pupil and says that Verstappen performs 'phenomenally'.
Verstappen does a great job
"Mercedes did a great job during the winter, they came out with a very competitive car. But we can split the two Mercedes drivers at the moment, which is especially a phenomenal achievement for Max", says Horner to Motorsport.com.
According to Horner, the performance of Red Bull this season is mainly due to Verstappen. Let the Brit know that Red Bull is doing everything in its power to close the gap. "But Mercedes is like a well-oiled machine, a machine in which a lot of money is put into it. Their total package is simply very good. But good: we will continue to work very hard ourselves, not only for this year but also with a view to next season", Horner continues.
Long season
"Hopefully there are some good things in the pipeline and we will be able to understand our problems better and better at the beginning of this season so that we can develop the car even better", says Horner. Red Bull's team boss also welcomes the fact that there are still eleven races to go this season. "Normally we only have about nine races to go when we come here after the summer break, but this year we still have eleven races to go."
