"Monza could be a circuit where Verstappen can compete with Mercedes"
- GPblog.com
Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen were once again confronted with the facts on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Mercedes is not only dominant on twisty circuits like the Hungaroring and Catalunya, the Dutchman also had no chance of victory on the flowing Spa. Is that going to be different this weekend?
That question was asked by Nu.nl to Ho-Pin Tung: "I see it positively," says Tung. He cites last season as an example. Due to a penalty Verstappen couldn't compete in the front at the time, but during the last free practice session he did a good job and was on the heels of the fastest Ferrari.
'Power circuit' doesn't say it all
From Ferrari Verstappen will probably have little trouble this year, but the Mercedes now seems to be good everywhere. The track he came closest to (without the help of tire problems at Mercedes) was the Red Bull Ring, now almost two months ago. According to Tung, that offers a little bit of hope.
"So this could be a circuit where he can compete with Mercedes. For example, Verstappen is often very good in Austria. It just has a little more turns than Monza, but it's also a power circuit. But of course Mercedes is also a favourite at Monza."
