Claire and Frank Williams will no longer be seen in the Formula 1 paddock from the Tuscany Grand Prix onwards. A decision that is respected by many and after much criticism Ralf Schumacher is now also praising.

Williams takes a new direction

On Thursday it was announced that Claire and Frank Williams will step down. They want to give the new owners of Dorilton Capital the space to build their own team and have decided to withdraw. A courageous step, because after 40 years of Formula 1 you don't get out that easily.

''The team itself is still able to work independently, because most people have been working there for a long time and are proud of what they have achieved. However, this machine has not made any progress in recent years. No new people have joined and the plant itself hasn't been modernised either," said Schumacher to Sky Germany.

Missed opportunity with BMW

''That's why it's not bad at all that the family made this choice. In fact, I think it is very good. They missed a good opportunity with BMW in time and then it just went downhill," added the German about the years 2000-2005 where BMW were already trying to buy the team to become a factory team.

''The person who will take the lead has to find out who he wants to keep and what needs to change. This is the ideal time to do that, because the season goes by quickly and you have to act quickly. If you want to perform next year, then every day counts," concluded the driver who won his only six victories in F1 with the Williams team between 1999 and 2004.
