Pierre Gasly and AlphaTauri had an excellent Friday prior to the Italian Grand Prix. In fact, they are competing for the top five and perhaps the last podium place. A small problem at the end of FP2 was not going to spoil the fun.

"This is by far our best Friday since the start of the season," a cheerful Gasly told Formula1.com at the end of the second session. "Unfortunately we had a small problem with the silencer at the end of our longrun, but overall we are quite satisfied."

AlphaTauri enters the top five

Gasly and AlphaTauri will not have been named as contenders for a top-five ranking prior to this weekend. The Frenchman himself was surprised by this. Nevertheless, it is now one of the real possibilities, especially because their competitors may suffer more from the new guidelines around party mode.

"Well, we don't really have a clue," said Gasly when asked where his speed comes from. "It's even a surprise to see us so close to the top. I think our adjustment with little downward pressure is working well, but I think we can improve a bit for tomorrow."
