Pirelli: "Fastest strategy around Mugello is a two-stop"
- GPblog.com
The Tuscan Grand Prix is expected to be a challenge for the drivers and for the Pirelli tyres, just as it was around Silverstone. According to Pirelli, a two-stopper will be the fastest strategy.
With multiple turns at full throttle, the Mugello circuit will cause a lot of wear and tear in the tyres. Add to that the high temperatures - according to AccuWeather the mercury will rise to as much as 29 degrees in the afternoon in Tuscany - and it will be a Grand Prix where the tyres won't last long.
Pirelli's recommendation is to make two pit stops during the race, Albert Fabrega reports on Twitter. The fastest strategy according to the tyre manufacturer is a stint on the soft tyres, followed by a stint on the medium tyres and finally another stint on the soft tyres. A race on softs and then two mediums is also possible for those drivers who still have two sets of new medium tyres in the garage - such as Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. A stint on medium tyres and then a stint on hard tyres is, according to Pirelli, the slowest strategy possible today.
Continuation of Silverstone?
The recommended strategy and weather forecasts will sound like music to Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen. In similar circumstances, the Dutchman managed to win the second Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit. In hot weather, the tyres of the Mercedes cars seem to wear off just a little faster. We will see if there is truth in that this afternoon.
