Brawn: "The arrival of Vettel at Racing Point will raise expectations"

The Tuscan Grand Prix in Mugello should have been entirely dedicated to the 1000th Ferrari Grand Prix. On Wednesday, however, it became clear that the focus of attention was probably on a different aspect of Ferrari. On Thursday morning that rumour was confirmed, as Sebastian Vettel announced that he would be driving for Racing Point in 2021.
According to Ross Brawn, Vettel's choice has been a very good one. “It’s a big statement by Lawrence Stroll. Vettel is a proven champion and I think, still has the fight in him. Drafting in someone of his stature will help lift everyone inside the team, whose aspirations are now significantly higher”,explains Brawn in his column on Formula1.com.
Perez earns a spot in 2021
“His experience will be invaluable. But it is now putting the team on a different level and the results will need to start matching Lawrence Stroll’s ambition”. So in 2021 the team will fight for the podium places. For Brawn, the switch was no longer a surprise. “It was a story that has dominated the headlines for several months now, so it wasn’t a surprise when Racing Point announced Sebastian Vettel would join them next season ahead of their rebrand as Aston Martin F1 Team."
Brawn does sympathise with Sergio Perez, who now has to look for a new team. “Perez now finds himself on the move after a very long period with this team. He must have very mixed emotions. However, he’s a very fast racer who is driving at his peak right now and deserves a place on next year’s grid. Hopefully he can find the right opportunity and start a new adventure”, Brawn closes.
