Hulkenberg maps drivers' problem: 'That's why it's so sterile'

Nico Hulkenberg is working hard to get back on the Formula 1 grid in 2021. The German showed his best side in his raid for Sergio Perez and may have a chance at Haas. The man without a podium is also looking at the current Formula 1.
Formula 1 is boring?
Hulkenberg left F1 at the end of 2019. Renault wanted Esteban Ocon in his place and with the other teams there was no more room for the experienced F1 driver. So Hulkenberg is just a year away and can look at the sport from a different perspective. There he notices that the sport has become a bit boring.
''It has become a bit boring, certainly compared to 30 to 40 years ago. Of course drivers have to show their emotions, but the next week there's another race and if you've had a big mouth after a good result, you'll be criticised again if you have a less result after that'', says Hulkenberg in the GQ Podcast.
Perspective of Hulkenberg has changed
''So you have to balance this as a driver and sometimes show something. I was never bragging like that, but I enjoyed it more inside and with friends. If things go bad next week..... It can be fast in the sport'', says the former Renault driver, who wanted to protect himself above all from interviews pulled out of context.
''From the outside, I have now seen something that as an 'actor' in Formula 1, you don't see for yourself. The perception from the outside is sometimes very different from what you think. When you're busy with F1, you have your blinkers on and you're only busy with yourself. Now I see it from a distance and look at it very differently. That's quite interesting how your perspective can change'', concludes Hulkenberg.
