Lammers in favour of new format: 'More like the Champions League'

The two-day Grand Prix weekend at the Nürburgring raised many questions. Couldn't we just do this more often? Jan Lammers thinks so and even states that Formula 1 should be changed from the current format.
Formula 1 has been racing on Sundays for many years and training sessions and qualifiying are held on Fridays and Saturdays. A weekend of three days and also the day for the press on Thursday. According to Lammers, this could all be very different, because sponsors don't benefit from these days either.
Lammers wants a different format
''That free testing has very little marketing value for sponsors, who ultimately all take part in it,'' says Lammers at F1 aan Tafel. The former Formula 1 drivers therefore propose a completely different format, in which F1 is less dependent on the weekend and can draw up a calendar much more flexibly.
''What I've been calling for a while now is that the Formula 1 format should go more to a NASCAR or Champions League format. Why does that race always have to be on prime time on Sunday afternoon? Why can't it even be on a Thursday evening? Go test one day in advance, then you'll have an event in two days and you'll be able to respond much better to the different time zones'', says Lammers.
