This is how Mercedes can become world champion for the seventh time in Imola!
- GPblog.com
Mercedes have been dominant throughout 2020. No other team has achieved pole position and apart from the victories of Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly, the German team has won every race. Lewis Hamilton has not yet won the drivers' championship, but together with Valtteri Bottas, he will be able to win the constructors' championship this weekend.
The fact that Mercedes will be world champion for the seventh time this year seems, above all, to be a matter of time. That moment can come this weekend in Imola, because Hamilton and Bottas can make the difference with Red Bull Racing unbridgeable if they achieve a minimum of eleven points at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. If Mercedes have a lead of 176 points after Imola, they have won the championship. That difference is now 209 points.
What are the scenarios?
They can lose 33 points compared to Red Bull this weekend. So there are different scenarios in which Mercedes could become world champion:
- If a Mercedes finishes in the top five with the fastest lap
- If a Mercedes finishes in the top four without the fastest lap
- If Mercedes gets eleven points
- If a Red Bull does not finish in the top five without the fastest lap
- If a Red Bull does not finish in the top six with the fastest lap
- If Red Bull gains less than 33 points on Mercedes
Given the current dominance of Mercedes, it is therefore highly likely that Mercedes will once again be world champion after this weekend. From the very first moment in Austria, this was to be expected and with four races to go, Mercedes has already completed it.
