George Russell suffered a disappointing end to the race at Imola as he spun behind the safety car and put his Williams into the wall. Russell took the blame but in the meantime, he has received support from various quarters, including Mercedes.

Russell immediately admitted that it was his fault after he crashed behind the saftey car. Romain Grosjean and Lewis Hamilton had already offered words of support to the Williams driver and now Toto Wolff has backed Russell.

After the race in Italy, Wolff responded to the unfortunate ending to the race Russell endured. In fact, the team boss of Mercedes believes it is all part of the development. "That is all part of the development process I think everybody needs to put a car in the wall behind the safety car. We've seen that from the most experienced ones, and making mistakes under pressure. And I think what George has done today, happened to the best ones," Wolff told Autosport.

"It feels awful for him right now, but it's going to sink in, be like a scar, and he's going to be a better driver in the future."
