It has been more than nine years since Formula 1 last raced in Turkey for the Turkish Grand Prix . Since then, a lot has changed within Formula 1, such as the appearance of the cars and the teams on the grid. In 2011 Red Bull Racing were the dominant team, whereas now it is Mercedes.

Turkey's last GP was held on 8 May 2011 under the name of Formula 1 DHL Turkish Grand Prix. On the 5.3 km long circuit the dominant Red Bull was the fastest in qualifying and the race. A 1-2 with Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber in qualifying also became a 1-2 in the race. Other drivers who also drove in Turkey in 2011 include Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez

But missing on the list is Kimi Raikkonen, who was not active in Formula 1 in 2011 but has experienced winning in Istanbul. Other famous names who were active in 2011 in Formula 1 and thus raced in Istanbul are Fernando Alonso, who achieved a podium, Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button, Felipe Massa, and Michael Schumacher.

Rubens Barrichello was also still active in 2011 in Formula 1 at Williams. In Istanbul, Daniel Ricciardo also made an appearance, although that was just a single practice session. Nico Hulkenberg was also allowed to driv in the first free practice session for the then Force India. At the end of the race Vettel and Red Bull were in the lead in both championships, a lead that they would not relinquish.
