Max Verstappen has already adjusted its targets for 2020 and 2021. Where the Dutchman first wanted to become world champion, he now enjoys every small success. Robert Doornbos understands this mindset very well.

No title for Max

Red Bull Racing and Honda were confident ahead of the 2020 Formula 1 season. This was to be the year in which Max Verstappen was able to compete for the title, but in the end that turned out not to be the case. As a result, Verstappen has also become more realistic and that works very well according to Doornbos.

''You can tell by looking at Max. He didn't finish four times, but there was nothing he could do about it. If he does finish, he just finishes on the podium and on a good day, even in second place if he can beat Valtteri Bottas. At Hamilton, however, there's no size'', says the former Formula 1 driver at Peptalk.

Verstappen grows as a driver

''I liked that about Max, who said halfway through the season that he was no longer going for the championship. That has to be the case. He's looking at that stop on the horizon. You can stare blindly at the title and get frustrated if you can't, but at the bottom of the line he's a Formula 1 driver at Red Bull Racing, where it's all about him''.

According to Doornbos, Verstappen has also clearly shown that he is ready for the title race. ''They say you can't overtake in Imola, but he puts pressure on Bottas and makes a mistake. He is ready for it, because as a driver he is very mature. For 2021, however, you have to be realistic'', concludes the Dutchman.
