Max Verstappen does not think it is wise to start on the normal compounds in the current circumstances. The nine-time Grand Prix winner joked about Charles Leclerc's suggestion by wondering if his rival had drunk a few gin and tonics this morning.

"It's disappointing of course," says Verstappen about missing out on his third pole position in his career in Formula 1. He has now been able to give it thought after a night's sleep. "You can't change it now. We clearly didn't have the temperatures in the tyres at the right time, but today will again be very difficult with the conditions. We have been alerted."

The Dutchman knows that rain may be coming. "It's going to be very interesting and slippery," he states in the preview of Formula 1. According to Verstappen, the chance that rain tyres will start is very real. Charles Leclerc said he was considering just starting on the slicks, but the Limburg Red Bull Racing driver doesn't think so yet. "Is he considering going on slicks now? Has he had a couple of gin and tonics this morning?"

What Red Bull is going to do is not yet clear. "Let's wait and see what happens before the race. I think we can make the decision a few seconds before the tyres are on. It will be a lot of sliding on each tyre. Starting on the slicks is tricky. It's not going to be easy to make the right calls."
