The title may already be in the hands of Mercedes, but the battle for third place in the Constructors' Championship is still entirely open. Lawrence Barretto has been analysing which of the four teams competing for third has the best opportunity.
While Mercedes and Red Bull Racing are out in front in first and second place in the standings, the battle for third place is much more exciting. Racing Point are currently in the lead, but with three races to go McLaren, Renault, and now even Ferrari are within shooting distance. Who will take the fiercely contested third place?
Racing Point could do more
''If you look at the speed of their package, Racing Point should have won this battle long ago and focused on the duel with Red Bull. However, we quickly forget that this is still a young team that has been outperforming their resources for years," said Lawrence Barretto in his column for Formula1.com.
The journalist identified McLaren as the team that have been the most efficient because it is in fourth place with the least resources and perhaps the slowest car. Barretto therefore pointed to the drivers, who manage to get the most out of the car every week.
Vettel to the rescue?
''Renault was knocked out of the field for a moment by the strange conditions in Turkey, but it is almost certain that they will strike back in normal conditions in the next three races," said Barretto, who also points to Renault's impressive development curve.
Ferrari have joined the battle after an impressive performance in Turkey and in particular, Sebastian Vettel seems to be feeling better and better. ''He feels more and more comfortable in the car and therefore he can get more out of it. In addition to Charles Leclerc having a good season, they are also a strong team for the final phase of the season," Barretto concluded.
