Jarno Opmeer is the F1 Esports Series champion of 2020. The Dutchman finished seventh in the last race at Interlagos, but had enough to defend his title in the online class. He is the first Dutch champion.
The F1 Esports Series was set up in 2017 as a major tournament for thousands of players to participate. The winner at the time, Brendon Leigh, also became the winner of the first official season in 2018, when the drivers also became part of official Formula 1 teams. Leigh won that year for Mercedes.
Dutchman seizes online victory
Last year it was Ferrari man David Tonizza who took victory, but Leigh and Tonizza had to settle for sixth and seventh place respectively this season. The title went to Jarno Opmeer, who finished at the top with 196 points for Alfa Romeo. Frederik Rasmussen and Marcel Kiefer finished in P2 and P3, both driving for Red Bull Racing.
Opmeer is no stranger to racing, because at a young age he made a big impression in the Netherlands in karting. In Formula 4 he took seven victories at once, but frin there it went downhill. He was kicked out of the Renault program and in his last season he doesn't score a single point in four races. The fact that he is now making a future online is therefore a great achievement for the Dutchman.
