Schumacher: "It almost feels unfair to be happy about that"

2020 was a disastrous year for many people around the world, but not for Mick Schumacher, who won the Formula 2 title and secured a seat in Formula 1. In a Ferrari retrospective, the young 'Schumi' realises just how privileged this makes him.
"The pandemic really affected everyone and created serious problems for a lot of people. That’s why it seems almost unfair for me to be happy about what 2020 was for me, because to be honest, it was the best year since I’ve been racing, the one in which the dream I’ve had since I was a kid came true. Now I can say I’m ready for Formula 1."
F2 title was a close call for Schumacher
With a Formula 3 and a Formula 2 title under his belt, you could indeed say that Schumacher has passed his training as an F1 driver with flying colours. There was some doubt about that for a while, as this final season was not without its struggles. Although the contract with Haas had already been signed, it was not until the last race that he knew if he was also champion.
"Even though I knew I was going to race in Formula 1, I absolutely wanted to win the title, which is normal isn’t it? When I crossed the line at the end of the last race, in all sincerity I was not at all sure I had done it and part of me didn’t dare celebrate. Probably, these were the most intense moments of my career", Schumacher said.
