Big chance for Alonso: Can he take this record next year?
- GPblog.com
Although Fernando Alonso is already a proven racing legend, he can add to his reputation by winning for Alpine and setting the record for the longest interval between two Grand Prix victories by one driver.
All Alonso needs to do to achieve this is to win. An ambition he has already expressed on his return to the premier class of motorsport when he spelt out his goals at Alpine for the next two years as follows: "Renault has collected three podiums in 2020, I would like to improve the balance sheet. For a year. Then, much more."
Long-standing record
If Alonso crosses the finish line first in the coming season, he will break a record that has stood in the same name since 1990: Riccardo Patrese's. With a time of 6 years, 6 months and 28 days, he has the longest interval between two race wins.
The last time Alonso climbed the centre step of the podium was in Spain, in 2013, where he qualified fifth. That's more than seven years ago now. Alonso is also not the only driver to have gone without a race win for an extended period of time, Kimi Raikkonen had a period of five and a half years between his victory in Australia in 2013, and his win at the Circuit de Americas in 2018.
