Red Bull Racing hopes to compete with Mercedes in 2021 and came close at the end of 2020 with a victory in Abu Dhabi. According to Tom Coronel, in 2021 it will really happen.
Red Bull Racing in the hunt
The 2020 Formula 1 season ended with a victory for Max Verstappen. The Dutchman started from pole and crossed the finish line with a big lead. However, Mercedes seemed to have something up their sleeve and Toto Wolff mainly pointed to the 2021 car. Coronel, however, does not want to know anything about that.
''You lost the race, and who says that next year's car will work in practice'', Coronel said to Motorsport.com. Also, the loss of DAS will be noticeable for Mercedes, according to Coronel. ''Somewhere they have benefited from it, and that is going away now.'' Verstappen also has the advantage of a Dutch GP in 2021.
Verstappen takes the title
''5 September. A good date. The event will be supported by the public and that's the way it should be. If you see what the Verstappen clan brings to Germany or Belgium. There are just more Dutch people than Germans or Belgians. In the Netherlands, it will be a bank holiday and I'm looking forward to that''.
Coronel also has no doubt when asked about the world champion of 2021. ''Max. No doubt. I have often made statements that made people say 'listen to him shout'. Of course, it is wonderful to comment on that and everyone is allowed to do that, but the foreign press is even more lyrical about Max than I am, and they don't know anything about it? Come on, let's go, Max gets it'', concludes the Dutch racing driver.
