OFFICIAL: Red Bull Racing confirms acquisition of Honda Formula 1 Project
Red Bull Racing has just announced in a press release that it will take over Honda's engines from 2022. The news has of course been in the air for a while, but now it is official.
New regulations passed
Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri were basically without an engine supplier from 2022 after Honda decided to pull the plug from the Formula 1 project at the end of 2021. It had long been clear that Red Bull wanted to take over the engines from Honda, but that was not easy. Red Bull can't include all the costs of development.
That is why they wanted a freeze on engine development. Those regulations were already in place for 2023, but for Red Bull, it came too late. Now, however, the problem for Red Bull is over as they confirm that they will make the engines themselves from 2022, but there will be no development costs due to the development freeze.
