Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri will run Red Bull engines from 2022 onwards. A new step for the Austrian team, which is also at the start of a new long-term project. Red Bull is not leaving Formula 1 for the time being.

On Monday, Red Bull announced what everyone has known for a while: Starting in 2022, Red Bull will be making their own engines, now that Honda's project has been bought out and engine development is frozen as of 2022. A big step for Red Bull, who are now no longer dependent on an engine partner.

Red Bull longer in F1

''It has to be a long-term project when you see the investment needed for this. We also want to use it after the current regulations. It also shows how committed Red Bull and Dietrich Mateschitz are to F1 and that we are not afraid to take risks,'' Christian Horner told The Race.

''I think we have achieved more with our chassis group than anyone ever thought possible, and we want to do the same with the engine. Without this situation, Red Bull's interest might have disappeared quickly, but now we have our fate in our own hands. Red Bull is now too big a team to be a customer, with ambitions that sometimes exceed those of the manufacturer. This gives us freedom.''

New people at Red Bull?

Now, however, Red Bull will be rebuilding a factory in Milton Keynes to make it an engine department, but will also need to bring staff to the British factory. Andy Cowell is, of course, a name that goes around quickly, but according to Horner, the former Mercedes engine boss is looking for something outside F1.

''We first have to see who is available the current Honda group to join us. In F1 it is really about the right people in the right place, as it is for the chassis team. To my knowledge, Cowell wants to work outside F1 and Mario (Illien) has his own company in partnership with Honda. Maybe there are opportunities there for the future. For now, though, we need to find a technical director, a manager and an operations manager, and we have some candidates in mind for that'', concludes the Red Bull Racing team boss.
