George Russell sat in the Mercedes for one race last year. The long negotiations between Hamilton and the German racing stable also led to speculation. Would Russell strengthen the team of Mercedes this year? In the end that did not happen but Williams CEO Jost Capito says he has seen positive things.

Capito told German RTL that he saw Russell change. "When he drove the Mercedes last year, it catapulted his confidence back to the top." Asked if Russell could ever become world champion, Capito replied: "I think so."

In doing so, he bases himself, among other things, on the way Russell works with his team. "The way he works and communicates is absolutely professional. Especially for someone his age."

Future at Williams

At the end of next season Russell's contract at Williams expires. "That's the question, of course. We will have to see. Of course it depends on how Williams develops as a team. And how the regulations regarding the car will look in 2022", Capito said.
