Red Bull Racing had their pick of drivers for this season. Not only did they have options on drivers Alexander Albon and Daniil Kvyat , but experienced drivers like Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg were also available.
Unique position
The choice eventually fell to Sergio Perez late in the year. Speaking to Sky Sports F1 Christian Horner recalled that late decision.
"Last year we had the unique position that we could wait because all the other places were occupied. We had the unique situation that we could wait until the end of the year to make a decision."
Hard to ignore
Meanwhile, Perez managed to convince more and more throughout the season. "Checo's season just got stronger and stronger and the absolutely crucial moment for him was winning that race from the back of the grid in Bahrain and after that performance you couldn't ignore what he had managed to achieve."
Difficult decision
Although the Mexican driver's impressive form could not be ignored by Red Bull, it was still a difficult decision for the team. "Everyone in the team wanted Alex to keep that seat, but you just couldn't ignore a talented driver with Sergio's experience, so in the end it was a relatively easy decision, but we were just lucky to have time on our side."
