Gasly confident: 'We can fight with Ferrari and McLaren'

AlphaTauri did have a pretty good case in the championship last year by finishing the season seventh. After the first Grand Prix in Bahrain the team is in fifth place thanks to the points Yuki Tsunoda gained by finishing ninth. Gasly fell outside the points, but that wasn't down to the car, which seems to be very competitive this year and that bodes well.
Keeping up with Ferrari and McLaren
At least, that is what Pierre Gasly says based on the first Grand Prix in Bahrain. The car performed well in qualifying and also in the race. In conversation with Autosport.com the Frenchman says he expects to be able to perform well at the head of the midfield this season.
Gasly: "I think the pace we've shown all weekend we are in the mix with the Ferrari and the McLaren and that's the positive. I think we're clearly going to fight with them and on all tracks." He can put his money where his mouth is next weekend, when it's time for the second Grand Prix of the season, which will be held at Imola.
Scoring points in Italy
What boosts Gasly's confidence is that AlphaTauri will come up with small updates in the coming weeks and months to make the car even better. Thus he is looking positively ahead to the next race weekend, where he now hopes to score points.
"Looking at the positives I think the whole weekend we've showed some really strong pace in qualifying, the long run on Friday looked strong and I think we would have been in the fight with the Ferrari and the McLaren," Gasly reflected.
"It didn't happen, so now we just need to keep doing our work and focus on the next one and make sure that we get the points there. I'm sure we'll be back fighting with them for the next ones," he concludes.
