Starting with the French Grand Prix the FIA introduces a new test for the mobility of the rear wing. Many teams have already announced that they will have to make some changes to their design because of this.

Adjusting the rear wing

It should come as no surprise that teams are always trying to go to the extremes of the regulations, as is the case with the rear wing. Red Bull Racing and Ferrari have already indicated that they need to make some changes to their design.

During the press conference, it is mentioned that it took a long time before the FIA took action on the flexible rear wing. Especially Toto Wolff is disappointed: "We have been kept in the dark for a long time now", the Mercedes team principal says. "We denounced the situation with the flexible rear wing last summer, without receiving any feedback."

Mercedes will make wing softer

Wolff is asked if Mercedes will also have to change the design due to the tightening of the technical regulations. "Yes, we will have to adjust our wing," Wolff said. However, not because the wing is too flexible. "We need to soften it. Our wing is extremely rigid, complying to the famous article 3.8 that it must remain immobile. The new test that has been introduced is a half-baked solution that gives us the chance to soften it up and be able to bend it more in the future."
