FIA to investigate new rule for qualifying: 'We know the IndyCar rule'
- GPblog.com
After qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, the main topic of discussion was Charles Leclerc's crash, which resulted in the Monegasque managing to secure pole position in his home race. This meant that drivers behind him had no chance to set a faster time and the FIA will now look to do something about it.
One of the solutions would be to follow the IndyCar, that the driver who causes a red flag in qualifying, that same driver loses the fastest time. If it's up to Michael Masi, the FIA will at least look into this possibility. "Like anything that comes up, the FIA, F1 and the teams will look and investigate what is possible," Masi acknowledged in a conversation with Autosport.
Rule known to FIA
"We know the rule at IndyCar, which is also a rule at a number of other international FIA championships around the world." Whether the rule can actually work in F1, Masi doesn't dare say. He does think it could be a possibility at the top of motorsport.
"We will start looking at it and then decide together with all the important shareholders if it suits the sport or not," Masi concludes.
