Max Verstappen and Red Bull are dominating Formula 1 at the moment. Mercedes have had a tough time over the last couple of races and are mainly fighting off-track. That's the opinion of Mark Hughes, who thinks that this year is the season Verstappen can and should become world champion.

He says this on website of THE RACE, and Hughes has seen that Red Bull has developed better compared to Mercedes."There have been five trucks of new parts delivered to Red Bull. Red Bull and Honda are determined to win this title and have put in place a robust development plan. These are the fruits of that effort."

Although performing well this year is great, they'll also have to look to 2022. That's when the new changes come into effect, and those changes are pretty big. Still, Hughes understands that they are focusing more on this year than 2022 for now.

"Having lost to Mercedes for seven years, it's understandable that Red Bull don't want to shift development until they're ready to do so. Essentially, Mercedes are just hanging on now and have to hope that different circuits can deliver enough wins for Lewis Hamilton. It was only four races ago that Mercedes beat them at Barcelona as a result. At the Red Bull Ring, that scenario should have been repeated, but it wasn't. Verstappen's pace advantage was such that he didn't even have to push hard. That's what a raw performance advantage gets you. That's how the race of a faster car goes in the modern era."

Red Bull will be hoping they can be dominant again next weekend at the same circuit and run clear in both championships. In any case, the championship in 2021 has clearly become a realistic goal for Verstappen and his team.
