FIA announces decision on new Pirelli rear tyre construction
It was just a formality, but the FIA officially announced on Thursday that they had approved Pirelli's new rear tyres. These will be introduced by the Italian tyre supplier during the race weekend at Silverstone.
That is what the FIA announced in a publication of decisions of the World Motor Sport Council. "The World Council has approved the introduction of a new rear tyre construction for the remainder of the 2021 season, " the message reads. Some updates to the regulations regarding sprint races have also been approved.
After the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where both Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll suffered a serious blowout, Pirelli shrugged off the incidents. The tyre manufacturer was adamant that there were no problems with the tyres, suggesting that the teams may not have fully adhered to the prescribed tyre pressures.
A few weeks later Pirelli announced that they were working on a new rear tyre, which had already been tested during the race weekend in Austria. The new rear tyre would have a stronger construction. Both the drivers and Pirelli themselves were satisfied with the prototype, so the approval of the FIA was just a formality.
