In Formula 1 it has been clear for years who will become champion far before the last race. But the sport is looking for an exciting end of the season, as is now the case in Formula E. With one race to go there are several drivers who could become champion, including Dutchmen De Vries and Frijns.

Formula E is often criticised when it comes to the unconventional rules, such as Fan Boost and Attack Mode, and the speed of the cars. However, the brand new sport has everything going for it for it when it comes to excitement. The end of the season in Formula E is very exciting.

With one race to go, which takes place tomorrow on Sunday 15 August in Berlin, there are still realistic chances for six to seven different drivers. The last time that happened in Formula 1 was a very long time ago. Even in the legendary 2010 season there were only four drivers who had a chance to win the title in the final race.

Best chances for the Dutchman

The most likely winner of the Formula E championship is Nyck de Vries. The Dutchman has scored 95 points in his Mercedes and is at the top of the standings. De Vries is however closely followed by Edoardo Mortara with 93 points and Jake Dennis with 91 points. But outside the top three there are drivers with every chance to win the title as well.

Robin Frijns, the other Dutchman in Formula E, currently has 89 points and Lucas Di Grassi and António Felix Da Costa will also have their sights set on the title. They have scored 87 and 86 points respectively in the 2020-2021 season.

Shake-up in the penultimate race

The fact that the standings are so close with only one race to go is partly due to the penultimate race. That race was also held in Berlin. Before the lights went green Nyck de Vries was slightly more comfortable on the first place of the standings, but after the finish that changed dramatically.

De Vries was unable to get any further than 22nd place during the race, due to a flat tyre. Robin Frijns, who earlier today was still in second place in the championship, did not have a great race either, finishing fifteenth. That meant zero points for both Dutchmen in Formula E.

The competitors of De Vries and Frijns did good business. Lucas Di Grassi managed to win the race and with the 25 extra points he moved up the championship rankings. The Brazilian was followed across the line by Mortara and Evans, meaning that De Vries' main rivals have almost closed the gap to the Dutchman.

Sunday will therefore be an extremely exciting race on the Berlin asphalt. The final Formula E race of the 2020-2021 season will start at 14:34.
