This is what Mick Schumacher did better than his family in F1 debut
- GPblog.com
The Russian Grand Prix marked the first retirement for Mick Schumacher since he made his Formula One debut. This makes him the first member of the Schumacher family not to retire on his debut in the sport; his father and uncle were less fortunate.
Schumacher family had little luck at debut
His father Michael Schumacher made his debut for Jordan at the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix. He set a great seventh qualifying time, but had to abandon the race shortly after the start due to a broken clutch.
History repeated itself for Michael's brother Ralf Schumacher who also made his debut with Jordan. His first race was the 1997 Australian Grand Prix, but he too was forced to retire his car early in the race due to a gearbox problem.
For Mick Schumacher, his first retirement came considerably later than for his father and uncle. He finished no less than fourteen races in a row, until he ran into technical problems in Sochi and had to park the car in the pits.
