Should Formula 1 take measures to make it more thrilling?
- GPblog.com
Formula 1 is at the start of a new era. The focus is on sustainability, with the goal of becoming climate neutral by 2030. However, there is also another revolution going on: the fans are getting more and more involved in the sport, and might even become part of some decision-making in the future.
Fans get more say
More and more attention is given to what the fans want to see. The organisation of Formula 1 regularly conducts surveys in which fans can indicate what they like and what they would like to see changed.
Almost everyone agrees that the field should perform as close to each other as possible. That is the hope of the rule changes scheduled for 2022: more teams and more drivers who can fight for victories.
Balance of Performance
This brings us to the next topic: should additional measures be taken to make the sport more exciting? This could mean penalising good performance with a handicap to stop dominance, or equalising cars in the style of lower formula classes to give everyone a chance. This is also known as 'Balance of Performance'.
McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl definitely doesn't see that happening. "I've worked hard to end up in a championship where there is no Balance of Performance," he said according to Motorsport-Total.com. "But I think it's very important to know what the fans think, and I think that should be listened to. We're doing it for the fans," said Seidl.
