Wolff inconsolable: 'Red Bull could have driven circles around us'

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was not impressed with the defensive work of his drivers in the Mexican Grand Prix. According to the Austrian, the door was left wide open for Max Verstappen to outwit both Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton after just a few hundred metres. After the start, the team boss saw his drivers without a chance. According to Wolff, the difference was so big that Verstappen could have 'driven circles around Hamilton' at one point.
Even a better start would not have helped, according to Wolff. The Mercedes team boss doesn't believe his team had any chance of winning, even if the drivers had managed to keep Verstappen behind them in the first corner. "Around the time of the pit stops they could have been driving circles around us," he said to Sky Sports.
Wolff frustrated after the defeat against Red Bull
The Austrian was clearly disappointed with his drivers' defensive work at the start. Verstappen disappeared on the horizon, while Bottas was nudged and spun.
The Finn managed to snatch a point from the Dutchman on the final lap by setting the fastest lap, but it was to no avail for Wolff's mood. "I mean, that doesn't really console me at that moment," said the Mercedes team principal.
