The arrival of the Qatar Grand Prix hurts Marc Surer. The Swiss driver understands that Formula 1 travels to the Middle East, but would have preferred the Hockenheimring or the Nürburgring to return to the calendar.
With the announcement of Qatar, the final touches to the 2021 Formula One calendar appear to have been made. There are still seven races to go and it looks like all of them will go ahead. Qatar replaces the gap left by the cancellation of the Australian GP.
''Qatar has a circuit that has been around for a long time and the MotoGP has been going there for years. So it is logical that Formula 1 chooses this. However, it hurts me when we have a race so far, but there is no race in Germany. Qatar doesn't need it, but Hockenheim or the Nürburgring do,'' says Surer at Sport1.de.
Although Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton have been pushing hard for the environment and human rights, Surer does not expect any protest towards Qatar. ''In the past, we have seen that there is a lot of talk, but the drivers end up driving everywhere. The moment they get in the car they are drivers and that is all that matters,'' concludes the former F1 driver.
Funny all the armchair warrior-suddenly-activists here gawking on what a 'hypocrite' these racers are for simply doing their job, you really should get a little grip on reality sometimes
Whatever happened to "We Race As One". 25% of races in 2021 will be run in Countries known the world over for discrimination against women and children. I've lived in a Middle East country where racing takes place and have seen the discrimination for myself. I suppose "IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY" HYPOCRISY DELUXE
On human rights they may have a point, but as I have said often elsewhere and others here as well, it would mean we can't race in many western countries. When it comes to environment though, Qatar is nothing but a tiny spot on carbon emission charts. As long as the USA keeps emitting what they do, we could not ever have a race there again, let alone several.
Hams with his jetting between the US and back to attend prom nights, luxury car collection, involvement in motorsports since young age would emit more carbon than 100 humans combined, probably 10,000 humans in the third world. Phony and a hypocrite. The kneeling was just a fashion statement he's grown bored with.
Another one obsessed with HAM, wow, living rent free in another stupid head
If they ever go back to the Nürburgring, can they please use the proper iconic Nordschleife? Have watched so many youtube videos of different cars going around the track, including heaps of Sportscars races, why not F1 cars too? Would be fun to see how quickly modern F1 cars can go around the banked carousel. Would that corner be an overtaking opportunity, for cars to either take the low line or high line through that curve?
As nice a dream as it is but it will never happen, the Nordschleife in its current form, isn't wide enough, doesn't have enough Run-off and is too bumpy just to mention a few issues, even if it could get around a lot of the issues of becoming grade 1 safety rated due to being an historic track, the fact that there is an entire economy centered around it would put a stop to any changes required to make it happen. Nice to dream though...
Well F1 races in Britain,France, USA, China ....all these countries committed and commit human rights violations. There's never issues or comments around those races, for example in the UK a women is killed every 3 days by a man. Thats a human rights violation. The USA have had state sponsored terrorism all over the world ,not to mention the issues at their borders and the systematic racism that exists in the USA....all countries have issues stop singling out just one . F1 sees sport as a platform to bring people together and thats what should be the focus.
Stupidest stuff I have ever heard about the US I think you still live in your parents basement living off your Government stick to racing
everything said about the USA is true, look at in the south especially, where ethnic minorities and members of the lgbt community are subjected to abuse and targeted by authorities in the U.K. we have members of the police force committing horrific crimes and it either being covered up, or attention is diverted when questioned lets not pretend the western world is a bastion of human rights, the British empire was built by bloodshed, foreign internal defence programs from the west during the cold war are still causing issues to this day im not defending what happens in the middle east, but lets not pretend that they are outliers in a world determined to oppress someone, thats the way humanity has worked for thousands of years
