It was not a flawless weekend for Carlos Sainz, with a three-spot grid penalty, but the recovery was very good. The Spaniard crossed the line fifth during the race, after starting from 11th place. The Ferrari driver is happy with the speed his car had during the race weekend, he told Sky Sports.

Sainz's strong weekend was overshadowed by incidents. In the third free practice session, he held up Albon twice, after which he had to report to the stewards. Those kept it to a warning, but in qualifying Sainz held up Gasly, eliminating the Frenchman in Q1. The stewards were now less forgiving, giving the Spaniard a three-place grid penalty.

'Were very fast'

Despite that, the man who won at Silverstone last year managed to drive a strong race. "I think we had strong pace all the weekend. A pity about qualifying because we would have been in the mix with Mercedes and Aston (Martin). Our fault and our bad, we'll try and make it better next time" Sainz told reporters after the race.

Ferrari has often enough lacked speed this season, but this weekend things looked good for the Scuderia, and Sainz sees that too: "We are making progress. Barcelona with the high speed corner we struggled, we knew we would be stronger here due to the layout. Let's see now when we go back to Austria."

Perfect strategy

Ferrari's strategies are often criticised, but in Canada they went perfectly. Sainz commented to Viaplay on the strong strategic choices made during the race: "It was perfect today we nailed it, so it would be nice if you (the media) could give some credit to the team. Today was a very good day for us."
