Singapore Grand Prix

The Singapore Grand Prix is known for being the original night race in Formula 1. In 2008, Formula 1 embarked on a new path with races held under floodlights. Very quickly, it has become a common occurrence with night races in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi. It takes place at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in the south of the country.

F1 Singapore Grand Prix 2024

The 2024 Singapore Grand Prix will be the 18th race in the season. It is one of the most challenging tracks on the F1 schedule. It is usually swelteringly hot with high humidity. The Marina Bay Street Circuit is also one of the most technically challenging tracks on the calendar with lots of slow corners. Given the close nature of the walls, overtaking is limited and therefore it’s one of the most important qualifying sessions of the season.

Where is the Singapore F1 Grand Prix held?

The Singapore Grand Prix is held at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in the south of Singapore. It is located near Downtown Core and Kallang. The circuit is 4.9 km long with 19 turns. Despite the tight and twisty nature of the slow corners, it does feature four straights where drivers can push hard in the Singapore GP.

Singapore GP history

The most famous edition of the Singapore Grand Prix came in 2008. It became a trailblazer for F1, hosting races at night. But that event is also steeped in F1 history, and not all of it was positive. Then Renault boss Vijay Mallya ordered Nelson Piquet to crash so that a safety car would help his teammate Fernando Alonso win the race. This incident became known as crashgate and is still a common talking point in modern Formula 1. In 2023, Felipe Massa suggested that the race should’ve been null and void, which would’ve helped him win the 2008 World Championship.

Sebastian Vettel is the most successful driver in the history of the Singapore Grand Prix. The German has won five out of the 13 races, with Lewis Hamilton taking four himself. Fernando Alonso (2), Nico Rosberg (1), Sergio Perez (1) and Carlos Sainz (1) are the only other winners in Singapore. Hamilton and Vettel are locked together at four pole positions each. Charles Leclerc (2), Felipe Massa (1), Fernando Alonso (1), Nico Rosberg (1) and Carlos Sainz (1) are the other drivers to have secured pole position. It is the one Grand Prix on the current calendar which Max Verstappen is yet to win.

What time does the Singapore F1 Grand Prix 2024 start?

The 2024 Singapore Grand Prix takes place on Sunday, 22 September at 13:00 BST. Given the large time zone swing, the night race helps keep the event at a similar time to the European races. The first free practice starts at 10:30 BST (17:30 local time), and the second practice starts 3.5 hours later. Qualifying takes place on Saturday, 21 September at 14:00 BST (21:00 local time) after FP3 at 10:30 BST.
