Carlos Sainz's fastest time in qualifying on Saturday afternoon was not the only surprise at Silverstone. Nicholas Latifi managed to get into Q3, although he had to settle for tenth on the grid.
The Canadian managed to finish only fourteenth in the Miami Grand Prix this season. In qualifying he never even managed to reach the third session on behalf of Williams, but in Britain he did.
It made for satisfaction on his face afterwards. "I am very happy. You hope to make a difference in the rain," Latifi told Viaplay. "Q3 was more than we hoped for. The track was worse. I went for it because I had nothing to lose."
Latifi thanks team for result
That he fell well short of the competition in the third session did not matter to Latifi. "The tenth place is a great team result. My thanks therefore go to them," said the driver, who saw his teammate Alexander Albon stranded already in Q1 with a sixteenth time.
