Red Bull will procure their own engines for the first time in history
Max Verstappen will drive a Red Bull engine in Formula 1 from 2022. It will be the first time that Red Bull are present as an engine supplier in Formula 1, but it seems the best step for the future of the team.
Red Bull will design their own engine
Red Bull had to look for a new engine supplier after Honda announced that it will stop the F1 project after 2021. However, Red Bull did not want to be dependent on a manufacturer that also has interests with its own team, and so Red Bull chose a different route. From 2022 they will start making their own engines.
It is a big step for Red Bull, which has always been dependent on an engine supplier since its arrival in Formula 1. Now it is taking over Honda's engines and the team will produce the engines themselves. The development does not have to be done by Red Bull, because from 2022 the development of the engines will be frozen.
