Marko: 'Verstappen a bigger success story than Vettel's four titles'

Between 2010 and 2013, Red Bull Racing dominated Formula 1 with eight world championships, four for Sebastian Vettel as a driver and four constructor titles. Yet Max Verstappen is Red Bull's success story. At least, that is what Helmut Marko thinks.

In Austria, he let it be known to Kurier in Austria he let us know that the world title with Max Verstappen is on top of his list."He is definitely our biggest success story. Despite Vettel with four titles. After all, Max is still very young at 24, but already extremely experienced."

Many of the age records in Formula 1 are held by Verstappen, but the youngest world champion is not in the hands of the Dutchman. Sebastian Vettel managed to grab the world championship title in 2010 at the age of 23, with 134 days remaining. Verstappen is 'only' the fourth youngest. Lewis Hamilton was 23 years and 9 months old when he won his first title. Fernando Alsonso was 24 years and 1 month old in 2005 when he became the best in the world for the first time. Max Verstappen was 24 years, 2 months and 12 days.

Eye for talent

A huge number of drivers have defended the Red Bull Racing colours as juniors. Of course there are many success stories with Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz, Max Verstappen and also Pierre Gasly, but many of the drivers did not make it to Formula 1. However, Marko says they have become more than successful in other racing classes.

Marko says he has no problem with bad-news interviews. "A driver like Jean-Éric Vergne (who raced a total of 58 races for the then Toro Rosso) earns four million a season in Formula E. It may sound harsh, but: that which drops out of Formula 1 is still very capable of having a good career in another racing class."

Yet again Marko is in fantasy land comparing a 1 time phony champ to an actual 4 time real champ

Wow, another confirmation of the toxic culture within RBR, what kind of leader degrades the performance of a previous team member against another, thanks for the further affirmation Marko of the kind of human you are……

Between 2010 and 2013, RB had the best car on the grid, (thanks to Adrian Newey) just like Mercedes had the best car as well between 2014 and 2021 (thanks to their fantastic engine) Winning the championship in 2021 when the RB wasn’t the best car, means more as it was the drivers talents that overcame the odds to beat his competitor, rather than in the years when the car takes credit for the the bulk of the result. This is proven by the fact that if a driver wins the WDC but the team loses the Constructors championship, means he isn’t in the best car that year.

We've had this argument from you before, Mech, and as before it is still total bull....... RB finished the 2021 season right behind MB on constructors points, so across the year, the RB12 of Max was just as quick as the MB duo. Yes, Max collected more constructors championship points across the season than Valerie and Lewis made up the difference. So you could argue that the difference in constructors points was Lewis's skill Max is talented, but without the right car under him, he is just another fast driver

Euh, if Lewis collected more points for the constructor title than Max, wouldn't he have been WDC also? Just asking, because a part of your comment makes just no sense to me.

There were only a few points in it, but the key point is that it was pretty much even throughout the season. Mech's theory is about as watertight as a leaky bucket The only thing you can conclude is that both men had fantastic cars at the end of the season, each car exhibiting very different driving characteristics. What separated the two drivers was a safety car and turn 5

CJ77 16 July 2022 at 19:08+ 10555

TBF, Silverstone and Hungary are what separated them. Factor in the Mercs not playing dodgems and Lewis was not even in the running for a last race chance. The last laps were karma for all the carnage Merc drivers caused on Red Bull drivers throughout the year. Im excluding Monza as neither scored.

RB was not the fastest car every year it was only good on corners & struggled on straight ,Vettel just knew how to extract 100% from it & in 2010 Vettel won only by 4 points whole year was so competitive as there were many WDC contenders & in 2012 the fastest car was Maclaren. & If RB was really that fast then why Webber was not dominant like Vettel ? & 2021 RB was really good & even had a upper Hand in 1st half of the season. Mercedes only started getting dominant in 2nd half

With all due respect, Helmut, don't over- gild the Lilly. Max is a great talent and very entertaining to watch, but "...a bigger success story than Vettel's four titles" ?? Success must be earned with long hard graft and staying power. Let's review these comments in four years - only then can Max make them true

Not in four years, let's look at this comment in nine years, how many years have passed since those Vettel titles. Then it will be possible to truly make comparisons.

Absolutely correct mate, what's plain to see is the toxic culture at Redbull. Vettel elevated Redbull to a championship team and is the youngest WC what did he deserve to be thrown under the bus. The other toxic point is , Max can look forward to be thrown under the bus in a few years time when the next shiny driver joins Redbull. Toxic and I have been saying this for a long while now.

Andy Jager 18 July 2022 at 18:42+ 29

Vettel is not thrown under the bus with this opinion, why would you think that? Also I think you should learn what toxic actually means
