Lando Norris expects Ferrari to be able to compete for wins in Formula 1 again in 2022. The McLaren driver is impressed by the chassis of the Italians and states that the engine is the only thing missing for the team of Charles Leclerc and former teammate Carlos Sainz.
"The progress they've made in the last part of the season has nothing to do with the car," Norris said to Marca about the aerodynamics of the Italian car. "They've only improved the engines. I don't think they've ever had a bad car. Even in the last couple of years, I don't think they had a bad car. They just lacked engine power."
Within the paddock, it is still believed that the 2019 Ferrari engine was illegal. The team from Maranello had to make adjustments to the powerplant and as a result, had a very disappointing 2020. Last year, the first signs of recovery were present, but it is clear that Ferrari is not yet at the level of before. However, during the course of 2021, some upgrades were brought in which were of great value. Amongst other things, it earned Ferrari third place in the constructors' championship.
Norris suspects that Ferrari will be fully prepared to return to the fight at the front next year. "When the power unit was good they were winning races, so I expect them to be very competitive. This year they said they had not invested in the development of the car and were concentrating on next season. They are Ferrari, I think the most successful team in F1, and they are for a reason."
Norris expects a Ferrari capable of competing for wins and podiums in 2022. He himself and teammate Daniel Ricciardo also hope to get that chance on behalf of McLaren. The new regulations will create new relationships in Formula 1 and it is important not to be behind the times.
