Red Bull does it regularly in Formula 1, Toyota can do it in the World Endurance Championship (WEC): go from the very last place on the grid to the podium, after all. The strongest team in the endurance championship accomplished the feat at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. The trio of Brendon Hartley (who had crashed during qualifying), Sebastien Buemi and Ryo Hirakawa worked their way up from behind to second place, behind their teammates Mike Conway, José Maria Lopez and Kamui Kobayashi.
The balance of power in the WEC is very clear at the moment. Toyota are the fastest team, followed by Ferrari and Porsche. It was therefore no surprise that the Ferrari of James Calado, Antonio Giovinazzi and Alessandro Pier Guidi took the final step on the podium, thanks to a late overtaking move on Porsche Penske. At the finish line, the difference between the two teams was less than three seconds.
The race was rocked by a huge crash by Renger van der Zande. The Dutchman lost his car on entering Radillion, was unable to correct and ended up hard in the tyre pile. Van der Zande, fortunately, got out of his badly damaged Cadillac unscathed.
The Cadillac with number 3 was not the only hypercar to not see the chequered flag due to a crash. Antonio Fuoco hit the wall on exiting the pit lane, spinning his Ferrari out of the race. With Laurens Vanthoor at the wheel, a Porsche Penske also stalled, lying in third place at the time. The car stopped just like that coming out of the bus stop chicane.
In the LMP2 class, victory went to the trio of Robert Kubica, Louis Deletraz and Rui Andrade of Team WRT. United Autosports took second place, Inter Europol Competition was third. They all finished ahead of the hypercars of Peugeot (two cars) and Glickenhaus Racing.
