The German medium F1-Insider reports that talks are going on between Red Bull Racing and Porsche. This morning Honda announced that it will stop supplying engines from 2021.

Surprisingly, F1-Insider is able to report so soon after Honda's news that talks are taking place between Red Bull and Porsche. "The mother company Volkswagen has been wanting to enter Formula 1 with the luxury car brand for a long time", they write on their website. "They want Red Bull as their partner team."

2022 too early

But 2022 is too early, they say. Well-imported sources assume that Porsche will probably only want to take part in the sport from 2026 onwards. That is when the rules for engines will change. The CEO of Porsche, Herbert Diess, has publicly flirted with the idea of racing. "In my opinion, we should continue racing. Sport is becoming climate-neutral through the use of synthetic fuels. It is a lot more exciting, fun and interesting than Formula E", he writes on his LinkedIn page.

For Max Verstappen, the coming years will be very exciting at Red Bull. He has a clause in his contract stating that he may leave if Red Bull cannot offer him a competitive engine. The future will tell if the young superstar will stay with the Austrian team.

I doubt Porsche would supply the transmission if they partnered with Red Bull in F1. First of all because Red Bull makes their own F1 spec transmissions already. Also the double clutch transmissions used in Porsche and Audi road cars have no relevance to F1. Double clutch transmissions are not allowed in F1 plus they are too heavy. F1 teams instead use very complex seamless shift transmission which is just as fast but also much lighter. Teams tend to keep their transmission technology very secretive but I’m sure Red Bull has one of the better ones. I’m also very excited to see Porsche join F1 as an engine provider in 2026. It makes sense because F1 is pushing towards using biofuels and Porsche has invested heavily in biofuels for their future cars already.

PDK / DSG /S tronic ..... Who cares ... Fantastic if Porsche (VW) enters F! with Red Bull..this is mouth watering-ly excellent news. Brilliant competition for the Mercs etc ... Max with Red bull Porsche v Lewis in the Merc...! cannot wait for this (if it happens!) very exciting for F1

Yes but poor in transmissions

RedBull will try, but hardly Porsche will enter the deal. Such a huge effort, with lot of risks, for just one single client? (annoying client) Who pays for it? An engine which is making his first steps, it's the perfect weapon to challenge Mercedes... in 10 years.

VOLKSWAGON to supply F1 engines? Will they be supplying the transmission too? If its anything like their road cars DSG Transmissions, then I can forsee RB and TR having lots of DNF because of the transmission giving up!

Very true. My Audi's transmission went. Cost a lot of money to replace. I know lots of people who had to change their They are poor with transmissions.

Any DSG made after 2013 is supposedly faultless. Did you know that DSG transmissions are forbidden in F1 because they shift too fast? Much faster than their current gearboxes.

Admittedly, the later 7-speed DQ500 and DQ381 are better then the earlier 6-speed DQ250, but their clutch will still wear out, there is still flywheel failure and the Mechatronic Unit still have glitches .... until today!

Red Bull makes their own I think. Didn't McLaren even use them for Renault?
