Alonso to Red Bull? 'That's news to me!'
- GPblog.com
Usually the so-called silly season only begins in the summer months. That's when the rumor mill gets going about who will drive for which team next season. This year, it all seems to get going earlier, with a remarkable idea.
Crushed by Verstappen
Sky Sports wondered aloud on Saturday in Miami if the great talent Oscar Piastri would not be best lent by Alpine to Red Bull Racing. After all, the very talented Australian is without a seat and it is questionable whether the French will have a place for him next season. The English tv channel then concluded that Piastri might be crushed by Verstappen and that his career would be damaged.
Former world champion Jenson Button therefore had an interesting idea: let Red Bull contract Fernando Alonso to race alongside Verstappen. According to Button, there is no question of any risk of detriment, as the Spaniard is now at the end of his career.
Immediately dismissed
The reasoning was presented directly to Christian Horner, team principal at Red Bull. "That's news to me," he said. "We’re very happy with the drivers that we’ve got. Fernando is a great driver and it is fantastic that he is still in Formula 1, giving the +40 year olds something to aspire to, but he doesn’t fit our plans."
