Sainz ready for a battle tomorrow: "It's going to be a good fight with Max"
- Toby McLuskie
Carlos Sainz will start from the second row of the grid tomorrow, behind Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso, but the Ferrari driver is confident that a strong result can still come out of the race.
"We are in a good position for tomorrow," he told Jaques Villeneuve after qualifying, "it's going to be a good fight with Max because he has been quick all weekend and then Alonso as well."
Ferrari struggling in the wet compared to others
With Charles Leclerc starting from the back of the grid in tomorrow's race, Sainz was the only Prancing Horse on track and struggled to compete with those around him who were improving with every lap and said: "Today I was feeling quite okay with the car, especially in the full wet. The track was drying, but I felt like the others made a bit of a step and I was maybe lacking a few tenths."
Final lap was close to pole
The Spaniard was close to claiming pole but a slide in the final corner halted this, but Sainz knew it was going to be hard to beat Verstappen, stating, "I was purple in sector 1, but then in sector 2, I knew that I had lost a little bit too much and in the last corner I tried to do a fast one and it didn't pay off and cost me half a second. I just tried to go for it and it got P3."
