Alonso keeps eye on a win: 'We will attack Max in Turn 1!'

Fernando Alonso was strong all weekend in Canada, but probably did not expect himself to be allowed to start in second position on Sunday. In the end, he only had to let the unleashed Max Verstappen ahead of him.

Alonso on the front row of the grid

"It feels great. It's been an unbelievable weekend for us so far. We have been competitive in the free practice sessions, although we usually are on Fridays, we then lose some speed on Saturdays. Thanks to the wet conditions today. The car was mega, I was so comfortable in it and I think the fans also pushed me extra," said a very elated Alonso after qualifying.

Alonso has a prospect of his first podium since the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix, but the Spaniard himself wants more than a podium finish: "Let's see, I think we will attack Max in the first corner."

Great to see different constructors doing well... If Max has a hiccup it could be a great battle for 1st place...

The one thing that raises my eyebrow: Williams was shrewd to dump Merc for the Renault PU! Alonzo is a masterful driver and with the right car, he’s downright dangerous! Should be an excited start!

Max just needs to be patient. Not a concern if Alonzo gets him on turn one. By lap three Max should be ahead.

This will be fun. I don't expect Max to worry much about the first corner. I do expect he'll win the race, barring any mechanical problems

Tomorrow we will see 2 streetfighters go head to head. May it be monumental!! ,as the F1 has had enough years where the win was assured before the start. Pardon the pun MB.

Alonso poses a greater threat to Max than Sainz does. Sainz is the driver under the most pressure as he is the only driver from Ferrari and RB that hasn’t come close to winning a race this year yet. Leclerc won 2 and was pipped by Max losing 2 races in the final few laps of some epic duels. Sainz should be trying to challenge for the WDC instead of looking to win his first race.

Love to see Alonso in fine form. If Alpine can keep giving him a good car like this I think his fire will see him get a few podiums this year

Fantastic qualifying. Max was alone in his level. Alonso was brilliant.

I think Alonso will be relishing the fight with Lew more than anything. How bad is Sainz though. Still couldn't get a front row with Perez and Leclerc out of the picture. Such a mediocre driver.

Could you please stay objectively.. Mediocre driver... I love how couch potatoes always see themselves as the real experts. He is a great driver nevertheless and has shown it many times in the past. I'd love to see you drive. You wouldn't even be able to start the car. :D
