Russell wants dream to come true: 'It would mean a huge amount'

George Russell faces a Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend for the first time since his switch to Mercedes. It represents an opportunity for Russell to secure victory in his homeland, although Red Bull Racing and Ferrari are the favourites.
Last season, the driver finished just short of the top ten in Britain with a twelfth place, but at the time he was still racing for Williams. With Mercedes, he can make a serious bid for a podium. At the same time, Russell has only one goal, as he explains in the Beyond the Grid podcast from Formula1.com.
"It would mean a huge amount," Russell points to the top spot. "I want my first podium at Silverstone to be on the top step, so that's what I am absolutely going for. Not that I'd back off on the last lap if I'm second or third to not be on the podium, but Silverstone has such a fond place in my heart."
Russell holds out hope for victory
Russell, therefore, has a tough challenge ahead of him this weekend, as Mercedes' performance has been pretty poor so far this season. Although Toto Wolff sees the German formation improving, the team boss does not yet expect Mercedes to be the favourite at Silverstone.
Russell does not seem to care for the moment. The driver wants to show everything he's got in England and maintains his ambition to take the top prize at the end of the weekend. "Just being my home race, the support is huge, so I can't wait to get there, and I'll be giving it absolutely everything I've got."
