Max Verstappen dealt his competitors a first blow on Friday afternoon. The Dutchman managed to set the fastest time in the first free practice session, ahead of Charles Leclerc and George Russell.

Because of the sprint race scheduled for Saturday, qualifying already took place at the end of the afternoon on Friday. It made the first practice session of the race weekend immediately important. All drivers took to the track with the hope that the performance of the car would be good right from the start.

Verstappen made the biggest impression by ending up on top with a time of 1:06:302. His team-mate Sergio Perez came no further than P4 and was over five-tenths slower than Verstappen. Leclerc and Russell did manage to be in the top three.

Haas happy, problems at McLaren

The Haas team managed to get Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher both in the first ten drivers. Where the Dane was good for a sixth-place, Schumacher took P9. McLaren was less fortunate. The team saw Lando Norris retire, while Daniel Ricciardo recorded the seventeenth time.
