Wolff believes Mercedes have a small title shot: 'Wouldn't discount it'
Toto Wolff is buzzing to see George Russell and Mercedes on pole position for the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix. After six months of disappointment and frustration, Wolff was back to his jokey self and even suggested his team still have a small title shot available if they win the race tomorrow.
Mercedes return
It looked like Ferrari were going to get P1 and P2 but Russell crossed the line last to take pole position. Wolff joked that it has been a long time since he joined Sky Sports on their platform in the paddock.
"First of all, I'm glad to be invited again here. You only pick the winners. We just need to write down everything we did, including the food and drinks in order to replicate. Because we wanted to play it easy until the summer break and then interfere again...the truth is we saw it from the start of qualifying. The car was balanced and the tyres in the right window. Everything came together. George drove it well and gained confidence," Wolff told Sky Sports.
"In these moments you want to cry of joy for pole position, equally you know the car was good for him to be there as well. Bittersweet. Let's see what we can do. if we have the pace, then we're part of the fun and games at the front again."
Still in the fight?
Ferrari and Red Bull in particular have been racing at the front of the grid and picking up most of the trophies in the 2022 F1 season. Whilst Mercedes have earned a few podiums, including P2 and P3 last time out, they face a big deficit in the championship. But Wolff doesn't give up hope.
"We have a big point gap behind Max. Then they were out of the fight at the front, we will never give up. I wouldn't discount anything if we're able to win tomorrow," he added.
